Apple iPod Classic
The iPod Classic was originally known as simply “iPod” until September 2007, as it was the first ever incarnation of the now-famous portable media player manufactured by Apple Inc. Going through a total of six different revisions, the iPod Classic is a much more sophisticated piece of consumer technology than the original iPod that was first released in October 2001. With a robust set of features, highly-improved design, and remarkable user interface the iPod Classic is a very popular, impressive-selling portable media device.
The iPod Classic offers users 160 GB of total storage. This rounds out to about 40,000 songs, 25,000 photos, or 200 hours of video depending on a user’s preference in media. Using the trademarked ‘click wheel’ user interface, navigation through all the various forms of media on an iPod Classic is fast and simple. The iPod Classic display highlights selections as the user manipulates the click wheel, and provides playback when a particular file is chosen. The Classic’s firmware aids in being able to store a cache of songs for zero slowdown, with a hefty 64 MB of RAM loaded to the iPod Operating System to offset the stress of continual playback of songs on the 160 GB storage drive.
Additional features of the iPod Classic include basic PDA-functionality such as checking schedules and social contacts from synching with a host computer. iPod Classics can also download various games and utilities from the iTunes Store (in addition to the media offered for sale which provides easy transferal onto the Classic’s storage drive.) There are several Apple-compatible products that allow for synching up with an iPod Classic, from next-generation video game consoles like the PlayStation 3 (through the use of the USB ports), to home theater entertainment systems with an iPod docking system in place for an unrivaled audio/video platform to experience all of the Classic’s stored media. Most modern cars also have built-in iPod docking stations to allow passengers and drivers alike the freedom of listening to their music collection during long (or short) drives.
A large improvement over the blocky, plain design of the original iPod from October 2001, the iPod Classic is a much sleeker, slimmer piece of consumer electronics that Apple has slowly perfected over nearly a decade in design revisions. The iPod Classic offers an all-metallic, anodized aluminum and steel enclosure to help prevent damage (cosmetic or otherwise) when accidentally dropping it or banging it against something (as is common when transferring it from several different docking bays). Available colors of the iPod Classic are silver or jet black, although there are options to use iPod covers of various different colors to help protect and customize the device further. Slim enough to fit in a dress shirt pocket (for ease of listening while at work), or kept in the back pocket of a runner’s training gear, the iPod Classic’s design is tailor made for any situation where a person wants to have access to their portable media collection.
